    Studt, Thomas (Kennedy 1977)

The Taylor Alumni Association extends condolences to the family and friends of Thomas Studt. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thomas “Tommy” Edward Studt age 65, of Fenton, Michigan, after a courageous battle with an unexpected illness. May 12, 2024. A Memorial Service was held 1 PM Saturday June 1, 2024 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation was held 11 AM - 1 PM Saturday June 1st. Tom was born in Taylor, Michigan on January 19th, 1959. He was a beloved figure anywhere he went as his charm and quick wit were second only to his skill as a mechanical genius. If you saw Tom you could expect an ever-present smile on his face, an ice cold glass of milk in his hand and a story about to be told. He was a man who possessed a gift for gab & a desire to live life to the fullest. This led to a life filled with friends and family and adventure everywhere he turned! He had a passion for cars and spent most of his life racing and fixing them. He had a big heart and would have been rich for fixing cars if he had charged more than an ice cream sandwich. If you couldn’t find him on the racetrack, you could find him near the lake working as a master boat mechanic through his most proud business, “The Boat Guy.” He also loved McDonald’s ice cream cones, the outdoors, fishing, bon fires, camping and even met his wife, Jenifer, while on a camping trip. He married the love of his life in August of 1996 and spent his life being more than a husband as he was an even greater friend to her. Together, they shared 5 children Kristy (Michael) Panko, Tiffany (Christopher) Binion, Gary Haines, Thomas (Kelly) Studt and Gracee Carney, who are survived by him. While we lost a great man, we can smile up at Heaven whenever we think of Tom, and know without a doubt, that God definitely has a Crew Chief for his heavenly pit crew! Forever racing number 33. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Jenifer Studt, their 5 children, and grandchildren Michael, Mason, Hope, Lucy, Hailey, Baylon, Jazzpurr, Raelin, Middknight, Ryder, Lola, Thomas, and Daisy. Family Tribute ~
    Larry Miele - April 9, 1948 - March 26, 2024
Larry Miele, long time resident of Woodhaven, passed away on March 26th at the age of 75 years old. Larry attended Melvindale High School where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a phenomenal athlete. Nicknamed “The Animal”, he set records that are still unbroken in wrestling. He was a two-time state champion, a two-time state runner-up and third in the nation. He graduated in 1966 as a 4 year varsity letterman for four sports: football, basketball, wrestling and track and field. He continued his wrestling career at Iowa State and Eastern Michigan University. He earned his Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in education. He paid his way through college as a mason brick layer with his brother Gary and their business called Miele Masonry. His handiwork can be found in Detroit and the Downriver area to this day. Larry retired from a 42 year career in education in 2013 from Southgate Anderson High School. He started out student teaching at Truman High School, taught social studies, health and physical education at Riverview High School and was a counselor for the Downriver Career Technical Consortium. From there, he was a principal at Downriver High School and was a counselor for the summer youth program through SEMCA and Michigan Works.
Finishing out his career, he spent the last 14 years at Southgate Anderson High School. He was their assistant principal, CTE director and summer school principal. Throughout his career he was an award winning coach. Coaching wrestling at Eastern Michigan University, Aquinas, and Riverview, football and basketball at Melvindale, cross country and track at Riverview and youth sports for his two daughters, Carly and Kelly. He was also a wrestling referee and sideline warrior for all of his grandkids and loved his dogs.

Larry was known for his jovial personality and his ability to connect with people. He made a nickname for each person he met the minute he was introduced to someone. He always had the world’s smallest coffee cup in his hand and knew everybody. He would say his greatest accomplishment in life was his 50 year marriage to his soulmate. He loved cooking his famous Miele meatballs and sauce for his family and friends. He made homemade pickles with ingredients from his vegetable garden for everybody. His connection to the community was so valuable to him. His memberships of the Woodhaven Moose, fraternities, Knights of Columbus, Rotary, Hall of Fame Committee and Hall’s Angels, is where his legacy will live on. Larry is known for attending all activities for his two daughters, Carly and Kelly, and his eight grandchildren. He was dedicated to supporting “his girls” in any and every way. He earned quite a few of his own nicknames, but I think his favorite will always be Chauffeur. Especially in retirement he took his job as chauffeur to everyone very seriously. Shafkalis, Michael (Taylor Center 1977)

The Taylor Alumni Association extends condolences to the family and friends of Michael Shafkalis. Michael Shafkalis, at the age of 64, passed away March 3, 2024. He left a life filled with many who loved him, adored him, and respected him for the man he was. To some, he was known as a father, husband, and brother who loved his family fiercely. To others, he was known as a loyal friend, a respectable business owner, an inspiring leader, a friendly neighbor, and a man who held the highest standards of integrity, grit, compassion, and purpose in his daily life.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Taylor, Michigan, Michael was surrounded by parents, grandparents, a sister, aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him. Growing up in a Greek household with immigrant parents from Cypress, he had to learn English when he began public school. He was put to work from a young age at the multiple restaurants his family owned, and attended the meat route with his father to deliver goods to local restaurants in the Detroit area. However, Michael's passion since little was always playing sports. You could find him playing wiffle ball or hockey in the neighborhood streets, or on the bus going to see the Detroit Tigers play from the season tickets his father got him. He immersed himself in school basketball, football, and baseball year round where he developed some of the most important, life long friendships he held most dearly. He later continued his football career by playing at Michigan State University (MSU) as a strong safety while receiving a Bachelor of Economics degree. Shortly after he graduated from MSU, his father suffered from a heart attack. Michael immediately retired him, took over a struggling meat route, and stepped into the role as head of his family at the age of 21. As his life progressed, he received some of his greatest blessings. He met his wife, Susan Merriam, and married on May 14, 1988. They had three beautiful children: Nicholas, Andrew and Sophia, and later welcomed their dog, Max, into the family. As a young father raising his family in Rochester Hills, Michigan, he coached his son's basketball and football teams, later coaching boys basketball at Lamphere, Seaholm, and Lake Orion High School. As much as he lived a life filled with abundance and fulfillment, the most important lesson he taught his family was to embrace the time when life will have it's challenges. He had the strongest will and mental stamina, pushing through any obstacle he faced. Quitting was never an option for him, and resilience led to much of his success and miracles he witnessed throughout his years. Michael always found joy in the simple things. It only took a fresh cup of coffee in the morning, a nice sunny day with the windows open, a great sports game on TV, David Sanborn playing on the speakers, good food (and plenty of it), or being with his family and friends to truly be happy. One could find him driving down the road in his Nick's Wholesale food truck, making daily deliveries to customers. Others could find him at the gym, working on projects around the house, cooking in the kitchen at Mike's Coney Island, or grilling Sunday dinners on the back deck. It would be rare to find him wearing anything but Levis, a T-shirt with the sleeves rolled up, size 14 tennis shoes, and a sweatshirt on the days that were cooler. Many would laugh from his witty personality, bringing smiles on the faces of all who encountered him. As we remember the life Michael lived, may we honor his legacy by living our lives as he did until our maker calls us home. What a sweet reunion it will be when we see him again, reunited eternally, because of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Because Christ lives, death hath no sting and the grave no victory. Until we meet again, you are in our hearts, standing by us always. Visitation was Friday 3-8pm with 7:30pm Trisagion at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile (SHELBY TOWNSHIP). Funeral was Saturday Instate 10:00am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1610 Brewster Road (btw. Dutton & Tienken Rds.) Rochester Hills, MI until time of Service at 11:00am.
